The Payment Verification Playbook: Stopping Fraud Before Money Moves

Fraud rarely announces itself. It can show up as a routine vendor update, a new bank account on file, or an “urgent” exception, dressed up with enough credible detail to get past the checks meant to catch it. Fraud and finance teams can respond by matching verification to risk: confirming who’s on the other end, flagging what doesn’t add up, and involving the right people before money moves.

In this session, digital finance leader David Birch joined Charlie Kroll, GM of Fintech at Socure, and Ramp for a practical conversation about verifying payments before they go out, including:

  • ACH: Catching fraudulent vendor and bank-detail changes before a payment is scheduled.
  • Wires: Spotting fraudulent wiring instructions slipped into trusted email threads and knowing when to require additional verification.
  • Credit card / card-not-present: Detecting fraud that can slip through the cracks.

The conversation explored how fraud and finance teams protect payment flows, drawing on Socure’s work across hundreds of fintechs and Ramp’s experience running payments for customers.
