Can spend program limits reset on a daily, weekly, or monthly cycle?
Short answer
Yes, spend program limits can reset on daily, weekly, or monthly cycles. Administrators configure the reset frequency when creating the program, and the limit automatically renews at the specified interval based on the selected schedule.
On Ramp, cards and funds support six reset frequencies: daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly limit, and annual, plus a one-time "does not repeat" option for fixed budgets.
How limit reset frequencies work on Ramp
When you create a spend program or issue funds, you select a frequency that determines when the spending limit renews:
- Daily : Resets at 12:00 AM UTC each day
- Weekly : Resets at 12:00 AM UTC every Sunday
- Monthly : Resets at 12:00 AM UTC on the last day of each calendar month
- Quarterly : Resets at 12:00 AM UTC every three calendar months (January, April, July, October)
- Yearly limit : Resets at 12:00 AM UTC on the last day of each calendar year
- Annual : Resets at 12:00 AM UTC on the same day each year (the anniversary of when the card was issued)
- Does not repeat : The limit does not reset; the fund locks once the limit is reached. If historic spend already exceeds the amount when frequency is set to "does not repeat," the fund will auto-lock and can be unlocked by changing the reset frequency to any other option.
Setting reset frequencies
For spend programs:
- Go to the Programs page and select Create program
- Set the amount and select your desired frequency
- Configure additional controls (merchant restrictions, category limits, max transaction amounts)
- Publish the program
Funds issued from that program typically use the same reset frequency, though individual fund settings can be modified separately.
For individual funds:
- Go to the Funds & cards page and select Issue funds
- Enter the fund amount
- Select the frequency from the dropdown
- Save your settings
Common use cases by frequency
- Daily : Employee meal allowances, field technician spending for materials and fuel
- Weekly : Team lunch budgets, small recurring operational expenses
- Monthly : Department budgets, SaaS subscriptions, recurring vendor payments, employee wellness stipends
- Quarterly : Seasonal marketing campaigns, quarterly team events
- Yearly limit or Annual : Professional development budgets, annual software licenses, conference travel
- Does not repeat : One-time project budgets, onboarding equipment purchases, special events
Temporary limit increases
If an employee needs additional spend within the current cycle, Ramp supports temporary limit increases that automatically revert at the next reset:
- The cardholder or admin edits the fund amount
- Toggle on "Reset at the end of the current period"
- The limit increases immediately and reverts to the original amount when the cycle renews
Example: A $1,000 monthly limit temporarily increases to $5,000 for a special project. At the end of the month, the limit automatically returns to $1,000.
Best practices
- Use monthly resets for predictable recurring expenses like SaaS tools and department budgets
- Use daily resets for high-frequency, lower-dollar spending like meals or transportation
- Use "does not repeat" for fixed project budgets to prevent overspend
- Apply temporary increases instead of permanently raising limits for one-time needs
- Review spend program reporting regularly to ensure reset frequencies align with actual spending patterns
