In our latest Accountant Spotlight Series, we're thrilled to introduce Emily Worm, Controller at Acuity, powered by Sorren. Her story is one defined by connection, creativity, and curiosity.

Redefining accounting in the remote work era

Remote work has quickly become the new norm, offering widespread benefits to employees and businesses across nearly every industry. While virtual workplace culture is now a reality, such opportunities were once rare. Originally from a small town in Georgia, Emily Worm had always dreamed of the flexibility of remote work, but the opportunities seemed few and far between. As she shared, “When I was graduating from college and starting out as a staff accountant, my goal was to travel the world and bring my work along with me.” Thankfully, over the years, that goal has become a reality for many. Today, Emily speaks to Ramp while working and vacationing from a friend’s home in Texas — a reflection of how far the accounting field has evolved.

True to her adventurous and curious spirit, Emily wears many hats, bringing a wide range of accounting expertise to the table. “I like to say that I end up working in every area of the firms I work for, and usually end up doing a little of everything,” she shares. “I’ve got a bit of tax and audit experience, but my pride and joy is consulting and advisory services.” Having spent most of her career as a strategic thought partner to clients, Emily’s own appetite for growth mirrors that of the businesses she supports, making her a dynamic force in today’s fast-moving financial landscape.

Empowering entrepreneurs worldwide

Since joining Acuity in 2021, Emily has become part of an international team serving more than 2,600 innovative entrepreneurs across the globe. Acuity, powered by Sorren provides online bookkeeping, accounting, tax, and CFO services, empowering small business leaders to build solid financial foundations. They recently became part of Sorren’s international network, joining forces with other like-minded firms across the country to bring clients a larger network of resources and service offerings, especially when it comes to tax planning and tax services.

Specializing in the cryptocurrency, eCommerce, and SaaS verticals, Emily has a particular focus on leveraging technology to drive long-term business success. “I really love working with these clients, who are often in the developmental stages,” she shares. “They’re agile, open-minded, and excited to experiment with different strategies to see what works.”

At the core of Acuity’s high-quality service is an equally strong commitment to employee experience, one grounded in flexibility and inclusion. With team members located everywhere from the United States to the Philippines and St. Lucia, the company benefits from a rich and diverse culture shaped by local perspectives. “When team members feel seen, valued, and respected, they become deeply invested. That’s when excellent work happens,” Emily says. While Acuity operates fully remotely, U.S. employees gather annually in Atlanta for in-person offsites, creating space to strengthen relationships and grow together as a community.

Embracing change through technology

As technology continues to transform the way we work, it also challenges businesses to pause and reconsider how resources are allocated and where real value is created. “As costs increase globally, part of our value lies in bringing the most cost-effective advisory services to our clients,” explains Emily. Rather than fearing technological change, she encourages accountants to embrace its potential, leveraging systems and processes that benefit both employees and clients.

With several of her clients already using Ramp, Emily has seen this potential realized firsthand. “I love having my clients enter as much detail as possible, bills, receipts, everything,” she says. “The fact that it syncs seamlessly with my accounting platform is the best. The more detail, the better!”

One standout client example is Marr Traffic, where the implementation of Ramp, including Ramp cards and Bill Pay, has significantly improved operations. “For me, Ramp is a game changer for month-end close processes,” Emily shares. “I spend much less time asking, ‘What is this?’ and can rely on the platform to find the answers I need.” These time-saving benefits were especially crucial as Acuity helped Marr Traffic during a major software transition. Emily and the team undertook a full conversion from Xero to QuickBooks Online, manually transferring and reconciling seven years of financial data year by year. “It was a huge undertaking,” she reflects, “but deeply rewarding to finally deliver a fully reconciled set of books at the end of the project.”

Championing connection

In the age of remote work, staying meaningfully connected requires a new level of creativity. While Acuity provides structured opportunities for engagement, Emily believes that true relationship-building often blooms in spontaneous moments through quick chats or huddles. She enjoys building connections with coworkers, sharing aspects of their personal lives, and meeting kids or pets on video. “Seeing people’s faces reminds you that they’re more than just words on a screen,” she shares. “People are never an interruption. They’re the whole point!”

Want to speak to an accounting expert?

To stay ahead in a rapidly evolving industry, Emily actively connects with peers and thought leaders on platforms like LinkedIn. From innovative tech partners to accounting trailblazers like Twyla Verhelst, she enjoys following experts’ perspectives on the latest trends, especially those led by women in the field.

Reflecting on the insights she’s gained throughout her career, Emily is most energized by the intersection of accounting and technology. She sees AI and automation not as threats, but as powerful tools to elevate the profession. “I believe in the future of accounting,” she affirms. “But if we want to survive and thrive, we have to embrace the change that comes with new tools and technologies.”

Boldly breaking the mold

At her core, Emily is a creative and collaborative problem-solver who seeks out diverse perspectives to drive meaningful, long-term growth. She brings this mindset into every area of her life, both personal and professional, using curiosity and connection as tools to inspire change. Described by friends and family as “bold and colorful,” Emily proudly embraces her identity as a non-traditional accountant, an approach that perfectly complements Acuity’s accepting workplace culture.

Beyond the numbers, Emily serves as a youth pastor at her local church, where she invests deeply in the lives of students and her broader church community. In her free time, Emily enjoys traveling and listening to live music across genres. Regularly found enjoying chips and salsa at her favorite Mexican restaurant, or settling in for a good read on her Kindle, she’s mastered the art of cherishing life’s simple pleasures. Whether it’s family, friends, or her beloved dog Bear, surrounding herself with meaningful connections is what grounds and fuels her.
