In our latest Accountant Spotlight Series, we're thrilled to introduce Geniene Scherer, Partner at Abdo.
Discovering the language of business
Geniene Scherer has always possessed a special mix of interpersonal and analytical skills. Beginning her college career in hotel and restaurant management, the opportunity to create a positive experience for others complemented her passion for connection. “I have always loved hospitality — helping to make people feel welcome and comfortable,” she reflects. “Then one summer everything changed.”
Enrolling in an accounting class, Geniene discovered that accounting is more than numbers - it's a language through which companies communicate their stories. She moved forward with her accounting degree, recognizing its potential for future opportunities. “There are so many career paths available,” she asserts. “I knew a strong accounting background would serve me well, no matter which path I took.” Joining Abdo in 2019, Geniene has found her home.
Proactive problem-solving at Abdo
For 60 years, Abdo’s team of experienced advisory partners has been delivering expertise to meet client needs. Serving a wide variety of industries, the firm focuses on real estate, manufacturing, government, nonprofit, and professional services, as well as several specialized industries. With over 30 years of experience across a variety of sectors, organizations, and accounting systems, Geniene is uniquely positioned to service a diverse portfolio of clientele.
With a wealth of knowledge and a passion for technology, Geniene prioritizes providing timely, accurate, and high-quality service. “I grew up on a farm in southern Minnesota and the phrase ‘separate the wheat from the chaff’ comes to mind,” she explains. Geniene and her team at Abdo excel at transforming data into organized, meaningful insights.

Demystifying the software landscape
In the modern age of accounting, lowering costs without compromising quality is the name of the game. With rising competition for experienced, competent financial professionals, organizations must harness the power of technology in order to gain efficiencies and reduce overall cost. Selecting and implementing new financial management solutions, however, can require a significant investment in time and money.
Through assisting clients in gathering business requirements for adopting new technology, Geniene recognizes the complexity involved in such an undertaking. “There is no typical cookie cutter approach to this process,” she explains. “Each organization has its own unique needs and complexities, and it can be difficult to sift through all of the information to come to an informed decision.” While this may seem like a daunting task for those unfamiliar with the terrain, Geniene’s wealth of relevant experience makes her the perfect partner to her clients. “I have been involved in software evaluation and implementation for many years now,” she asserts. “This is one of my very favorite things to do.”

The modern age of accounting
Abdo’s team of skilled individuals are tapped into the latest developments, keeping a pulse on the future of the industry. At the front and center of such trends is the application of AI, anticipating a meaningful impact on the firm, the profession, and clients alike. “We are carefully integrating solutions into systems and workflows, as well as proactively recommending opportunities for clients to leverage AI to enhance their organizations,” Geniene explains.
While the mention of AI can invoke a sense of apprehension in some, Geniene is excited about harnessing the power of technology. Aside from reducing the dreaded manual work and drudgery of accounting, it has the potential to transform what defines the profession. “We will elevate the level of our work and focus on what really matters — forward thinking strategy, decision making, and our people,” she shares.
The team at Ramp applauds Geniene’s commitment to advancing the field of accounting and is proud to have her as an Accounting Partner.

“More vendors are allowing for discounts now, because they’re seeing the quick payment. That started with Ramp—getting everyone paid on time. We’ll get a 1-2% discount for paying early. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you’re dealing with hundreds of millions of dollars, it does add up.”
James Hardy
CFO, SAM Construction Group
