In our latest Accountant Spotlight Series, we're thrilled to introduce Morgan Flear, Account Manager of Professional Services at On the Books. Her story is one defined by strategy, community, and humor.

The language of numbers

Ever since Morgan Flear can remember, she has been fluent in the language of numbers. Discovering her natural affinity for accounting in high school, the structure and logic behind the subject quickly caught her attention. Perfectly challenged by the mystery of complex equations, Morgan knew that this early found interest would evolve into a long-term passion.

Building on this foundational knowledge, Morgan now brings ten years of experience to the field. Each step has reinforced her commitment to the profession by expanding her expertise from basic bookkeeping and financial reporting to the management of accounting operations, strategy, and leadership.

Joining On the Books in 2020, Morgan has been with the full-service accounting and consulting firm for five years. Drawn to the close-knit nature of the team, she has found a unique culture of support, collaboration, and humility. “We’re a small group, but that’s what makes it special,” she shares. “We genuinely enjoy working together, and that camaraderie shows up in everything we do.” Cherishing quality time with the team, the occasional retreat serves as a reminder that real people and relationships extend beyond the day-to-day of work.

Helping early stage companies scale with confidence

Since 2016, On the Books has been laying the foundation for life science and technology start-ups. For many early stage companies, keeping track of financial numbers that drive important decisions can be a major headache, especially during periods of growth. Directly targeting this common challenge, On the Books was started to help startups build solid financial operations through dependable processes and exceptional customer service. “Our goal is to take the burden of bookkeeping off the shoulders of busy founders so that they can focus on what really matters—growing their business,” Morgan explains. “We help them understand the things that they don’t even know they need to know.”

Appealing to the needs of her clients, Morgan brings a down to earth, friendly approach to every interaction. With a specialized focus on the professional services segment, she offers an unparalleled expertise and understanding of the industry. “I really enjoy working with people who are building their own companies,” she shares. “There’s an undeniable energy and passion that they bring to their work.” Being a part of the journey of growing startups is incredibly rewarding to Morgan; the drive and commitment of her clients bring energy and meaning to her every day.

Making smarter business decisions with Ramp

As businesses grow and evolve, so do the conditions in which they operate. For Morgan, these transformations are welcomed, with new and improved technologies inviting novel opportunities for more strategic, forward-looking accounting. “Automation and AI tools are taking over routine tasks,” she asserts. “This frees up accountants to focus on providing deeper insights and helping clients make smarter business decisions.”

A central part of this technology ecosystem are Ramp’s spend management solutions. Before Ramp, tracking down receipts, reviewing transactions, and enforcing policies took extensive time and manual effort. Since adopting the platform, On the Books has experienced a substantial impact on core processes, streamlining expense management and reducing manual tasks. “Ramp has definitely helped improve our client relationships and support business growth by allowing us to offer a more streamlined, professional experience,” she reflects.

With real-time visibility into spending and automated controls, Ramp helps clients feel more in control of their finances without being buried in the details. The ability to create and enforce customized expense policies is a feature that Morgan frequently benefits from, allowing for control and compliance without the need to micromanage every transaction. “I can set clear guidelines for spending by category, team, or role, and Ramp handles the rest automatically.”

Delivering accurate and actionable client financials

Specializing in the professional services segment, Morgan has developed an intimate knowledge of the unique business profile of her clientele. “Two of the most common challenges I see across my clients are cash flow management and staying on top of financial organizations as they grow,” Morgan shares. For growing businesses that are heavily investing in operations, cash flow can be a consistent obstacle, affecting the ability to plan ahead, make confident decisions, and even fulfill daily tasks. As teams expand and expenses increase, processes that once delivered start to strain, leading to missed opportunities and compliance issues. “I work closely with clients to put systems in place that bring clarity and control back to their finances so they can focus on running their business,” she explains.

With a hands-on, approachable style and extensive technical expertise, Morgan finds fulfillment and value in bringing clarity and confidence to client financials. “It’s rewarding to take something that feels overwhelming or unclear to them and turn it into something they can understand,” she says. “Clients often tell me that I bring them peace of mind.” Going beyond accuracy and organization, Morgan ensures that her clients’ numbers can be used to make informed, data-driven decisions that grow businesses.

The power of community

From personal to professional, relationships are central to Morgan’s success. When it comes to building a network within the accounting industry, consistency and an open mind are key. Being willing to share knowledge, learn from others, and engage in one-on-one conversations with peers enriches and deepens Morgan’s insights.

As a big family person, she extends this same sense of community to her personal life. Whether it’s spending time together camping, enjoying the outdoors, or playing sports, Morgan prioritizes these moments outside of the office. “These activities help us stay connected and recharge. I really value that balance between work and family life,” she exclaims.

A self-proclaimed jokester, Morgan seeks to bring humor and levity into life’s daily moment, not letting a day go by without a laugh. Central to her personality, her sense of humor contributes to her role at On the Books, fostering connection and a positive mindset. Extending this energy and passion to everything she does, Morgan thrives as a natural born leader and partner to her clients. We’re proud to have her featured in this spotlight and as a Ramp Accounting Partner.
