Double vs Karbon vs Ramp Stack: Which platform fits your team?

Running an accounting practice looks different depending on whether you're on Double, Karbon, or Ramp. Double offers an AI-powered month-end close platform for accounting firms and internal finance teams, connecting directly to QuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage, or NetSuite through two-way sync so the ledger stays the source of truth. Karbon offers cloud-based practice management for accounting firms, centering on email, workflow, time tracking, and client collaboration rather than ledger-level execution. Ramp Stack is an AI accounting platform for firms and in-house teams that automates recurring accounting work. Through connectivity with all of a business' financial systems and accounting know-how, agents on Stack handle reconciliations, schedules, journal entries, and ad hoc analysis, producing reviewable workpapers and giving firms one place to manage work across clients.

Here's how Double, Karbon, and Ramp stack up on reconciliation and journal entries, ledger connectivity, and AI capabilities.

Next, we break down each feature to show how the platforms differ in practice.

Reconciling transactions and journal entries

Each platform automates reconciliation and journal entries differently, which changes how much oversight your team keeps over the work.

Double

Double's AI Transactions feature categorizes and posts bank feed transactions automatically, and Ask Double, its AI assistant, helps draft journal entries and flag coding errors as they come up. Accruals automates prepaid expense and deferred revenue tracking so recurring entries don't get missed between cycles, and built-in review tools let a reviewer check work inside the same close page rather than exporting to a separate document.

Karbon

Karbon centers on workflow and email rather than transaction-level execution. Its core tools standardize how work gets assigned and tracked, tie inbox activity to job status, and manage time, budgets, and billing across a team. A newer, separately flagged "Close Automation" capability is rolling out for month-end close, though its scope beyond workflow tracking wasn't verifiable from Karbon's public pages at the time of this review.

Ramp

Ramp Stack starts by connecting every account that matters to the close, including bank, card, and other financial accounts. From there, Stack identifies the reconciliations due each month and assigns agents to work through them: agents reconcile account activity to the general ledger at the transaction level, then build formula-backed workbooks that surface the underlying calculations, summary views, and transaction-level detail behind each number. When a reconciliation requires it, agents draft the resulting journal entries, attach the supporting workbook, and post directly to the accounting system once a reviewer approves the work, with the entry linking back to the session that produced it. Much of this runs on skills that come prebuilt for common accounting tasks, so Stack can complete work out of the box, while teams and firms can edit existing skills or build new ones to match their own processes, making the platform their own.

Ledger connectivity and beyond

Whether a platform executes against the ledger directly or sits alongside it as a workflow layer changes how much of the accounting work it can actually touch, and how far its connections reach beyond the ledger.

Double

Double connects directly to QuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage, or NetSuite through two-way sync, so entries created in Double post back to the ledger a firm or team already uses. For firms, billing is structured per connected client rather than per user, with unlimited users included once a client's ledger is connected.

Karbon

Karbon's Ecosystem Integrations connect it to other apps a firm already uses, including payroll, but Karbon itself doesn't post to a client's general ledger. It's built to sit alongside whatever accounting software a firm's clients use, tracking the work rather than executing inside the ledger.

Ramp

Ramp Stack connects to more than 20 systems beyond the ERPs it supports directly (NetSuite, QuickBooks, and Sage Intacct), including external card and bank activity through Plaid and HR or payroll systems like Deel and ADP, plus source documents and business knowledge from tools like Google Drive. For firms, a Client Comms capability lets teams quickly and securely request and collect information from clients, so gathering what's needed for a reconciliation or close doesn't depend on email back-and-forth.

AI features and category distinction

Double and Karbon have each layered AI into their platforms at different points in their rollout, which looks different from how Ramp Stack approaches it.

Double

Double's AI is scoped to the close itself: automated transaction categorization through AI Transactions, and Ask Double for drafting journal entries and catching coding errors. Both are framed as part of the core close workflow rather than a separate AI layer.

Karbon

Karbon's AI features are rolling out in stages. A general AI layer is live today across email and summaries, handling things like smart contact suggestions, email drafting, and client and work summaries. Kai AI Coworker and Agentic Workflows are both labeled Early Access, positioned to take on proactive, repetitive work like client onboarding and tax preparation once available. Meeting Intelligence, which would record and summarize client meetings, is labeled Coming Soon.

Ramp

Ramp Stack's agents are the platform's core execution layer, not an add-on: they apply accounting knowledge to connected data, produce review-ready workbooks and journal entries, and log every session in an exportable Session Audit Log, with accountant approval required before anything syncs. Stack comes with proprietary accounting skills prebuilt, so it can complete common accounting work out of the box, and firms and teams can edit those skills or build new ones, making the platform their own rather than a fixed tool.

Which platform fits your team?

If your priority is automating the close itself across many client books, Double's AI Transactions and Ask Double work directly against the ledgers your firm already connects to. If your priority is running the practice around the work, client communication, time tracking, billing, and workflow, Karbon is built specifically for that layer, with newer AI features still expanding on top of it. If you want your team to handle more accounting work, close faster, and spend more time on forward-looking analysis, Ramp Stack’s agents complete recurring workflows using connected financial data and the processes and skills your team defines.

See how firms are putting agents to work

For John Ikosipentarhos, President at Zeroed-In Consulting, the shift wasn't just working faster, it was working differently. Instead of staff completing work and then reviewing it in sequence, his team now runs multiple agents at once and spends its time on review: "We're running multiple agents simultaneously, spending time reviewing work, not doing and then reviewing."

Across firms like his, Ramp Stack customers have seen up to 60% faster closes and up to 9x faster recurring schedules and reconciliations, and more than 4,500 accounting firms, including 92 of the top 100 CPA firms, now partner with Ramp.

“I assumed I would have to choose between speed and control. What I found is that you can have both. A well-designed system takes friction out, for the finance function and for everyone else.”

What it takes to pay for an NFL season: inside the Denver Broncos’ finance rebuild

“A well-run district should not have to choose between getting work done at the school site and keeping control of the dollars behind it. We're not hiring more people to do more jobs, so we have to be smarter about the process. With Ramp, the purchase, the receipt, and the record stay together from the start. ”

“AI is moving faster than the finance context around it. Prices change, models change, and the value is not always obvious from an invoice. We needed enough detail to know which bets deserved more investment — and which ones did not.”
